Our History
Chester E. Lewis began trading with the Hopi and Navajo Indians in 1933. At the time, this was the first business off the Hopi & Navajo Reservation on Interstate highway 77 North, in Holbrook, Arizona. In 1949, Chester built the famous Wigwam Motel in northeastern Arizona on old Route 66 in Holbrook. The Wigwam Motel was designated as a national historical site. Many famous people have visited and stayed at the Wigwams. A couple of movies, such as "Dark Wind," executive producer Robert Redford and starring Lou Diamond Phillips, were filmed at the Wigwams.
Carrying on his tradition of trading with the Native Americans, Lewis Traders was built by his sons in 1974 on Interstate 40 at the 292 exit, four miles east of Holbrook. It was the perfect location for the purchase of fine Native American arts and crafts as it is situated off of the Navajo and Hopi Reservations.
Today Lewis Traders is owned and operated by Robert Lewis, a second generation trader, the son of Chester E. Lewis. With the advent of the Internet and eBay, we have adopted the domain name of ndnarts.com. Robert has formed lasting relationships with the local artists over the years. Lewis Traders offers the finest quality Native American products at reasonable prices because Robert buys direct from the artists.
